Apple has just recently recent two iPhones; the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. So, what’s the difference? Not much, but a lot at the same time. Confusing isn’t it? To get a better understanding of what makes one different from the other, a comprehensive review of the two latest iPhones below should be able to help you come up with the best decision.
Both new iPhone models are bigger than the iPhone 5S (4 inches), but the iPhone 6 Plus (5.5 inches) is bigger than the iPhone 6 (4.7 inches). In a way, the iPhone 6 Plus goes into the phablet category. The size is bigger than ordinary iPhones yet smaller than the iPad Mini, thus the phone/tablet size is just appropriate.
Since the iPhone 6 Plus is significantly bigger, iPhone 6 could be the better choice for people who like to have a good grip of their phone in one hand. The 6 Plus is also a bit thicker by 1 mm, which is something that may not be that noticeable.
iPhone 6 Plus
At 6.22 x 3.06 inches body measurement, there is no doubt that the iPhone 6 Plus is on the big size. It is actually half an inch taller compared to the Galaxy Note 3 from Samsung, but it is a bit narrower (7.1 mm to the 9.6 mm of the Note 3) and lighter too (6.07 ounces). Regardless of its dimensions, the 6 Plus feels good in the hands; some people even say it’s better to hold than other big smartphones.
Another good thing about the 6Plus is that it nestles comfortably in the hand because it does not have the chamfered edges and harsh lines of the iPhone 5, though both (like the rest of the iPhones) are made of similar material, matte aluminum.
The rounded shape of the iPhone 6 Plus though is not very stylish like its predecessors, but for those who would rather go for comfort than style, then that will not be much of a problem.
For the buttons, the iPhone 6 Plus has its Power button on the right side instead of the top, the volume buttons are still placed on the left side (right under the ring/silent switch) of the device but are flat and wide now and not round. Similarly to the iPhone 5S, the 3.5mm earphone/headphone jack is located at the bottom – next to the holes that produces the powerful sounds from internal speaker.
Home button sits comfortably at the front and the center under the display, and again it’s similar to the Touch ID kind of the 5S. This feature allows you to quickly unlock your device with your thumb and avoids the need to punch in a 4-digit unlocking PIN – which is a task that can be annoying with a display as big as 5.5 inches.
Just like with the 6 Plus, Apple has also decided to forgo the sharp industrial look of the previous models for the iPhone 6. Thus, the iPhone 6 has the same comfortable rounded body made of sleek metal back with plastic strips placed from top to bottom for better radio signal reception. The bad thing about the plastic part is that it’s kind of unsightly because it ruins the sleek back. At 6.9 mm thickness though, the iPhone 6 is definitely one of the sleekest and the thinnest devices in the market today.
For the buttons, similar to the 6 Plus, the Power button for the iPhone 6 is also transferred to the right side. This is of course a more sensible location since hitting the top for the Power button on a bigger device can be a bit difficult of a task.
Raised keys are the main thing for the iPhone 6; these include the Power and the Volume buttons. The Camera at the back is also slightly protruding. But it is not something that should alarm anyone as a sapphire glass is placed to cover the lens for protection.
And just like the iPhone 6 Plus, most of the design features of the iPhone 6 are taken from the iPhone 5S. For instance, the single speaker is still located at the bottom next to the headphone jack.
Reachability is a feature that both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have and it is a great addition as it eliminates any thumb-straining incidents. By quickly tapping the Home button twice you can easily slide the contents from the top part of the display down.
Sat, you are going to open an icon from a folder located at the top part of the display, all you have to do is tap twice and the folder goes down. Tapping the folder will open it and also brings it back to the top. Another double tap will again bring it down so you can choose an icon from the folder. It could too much tapping that you wouldn’t want to engage into, but if you are standing on a train or a bus this could come really handy.
Both new iPhone models have revised front and rear cameras, the 6 Plus though offers more camera feature upgrades. The iPhone 6 has an 8 megapixel rear shooter while 6 Plus has and additional optical image stabilization feature. Tests showed that with slower shutter speed, the 6 Plus produces sharper images than the iPhone 6.
Both models also have the latest video stabilization feature and it produces very impressive results. Tests showed that you can get smooth footage even if you shoot freehand and even while you are moving. That is indeed a very great camera improvement. Real-time autofocus during filming eliminates the need to keep on tapping the screen for following the action. Video feature is 1080p but you can now capture a video at 60 frames/second if you so desire.
The front facing cameras of both models have also been updated. Stabilization feature may not be present but has f/2.2 aperture, which means that more light can hit the sensor. This means better images even when taking shots in the dark. This is a great feature for those who like to take Selfies in the pubs.
Performance and Battery Life
The new Apple A8 processor is present in both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, and this is a really good step up from the A7 on the iPhone 5S. But when it comes to the batter life, iPhone 6 Plus really takes the lead – even over the iPhone 6. In the rundown tests, the iPhone 6 Plus proved that it can run for over a day without needing additional charging, while the iPhone 6 just barely made it through a day. The disappointing part is that charging both new models still requires you to use a cable. It would have been a whole lot better if the wireless charging on the Apple Watch is present on the new iPhones.
Both new iPhones have Retina displays, meaning the pixels are not resolved with the normal 20/20 Vision with the usual display viewing distance. The iPhone 6 326 ppi and 1334 x 750 pixel display while the iPhone 6 Plus has 401 ppi and 1920×1080 pixel display.
The display on both models may seem identical but the iPhone 6 has 1.0 MP display while the 6 Plus has 2.1 MP. This means that the 6 Plus has the advantage of having higher resolutions that can exceed the set limits of the normal vision of 20/20.
For instance it can be very vital having as much pixels as possible if you need to rescale an image from its native resolution. Most images will need rescaling and it has been proven that most of the rescaled images from the iPhone 6 Plus are better when compared to the ones from the iPhone 6. That is because the 1.1 MP difference.
What’s Missing on the iPhone 6
You have read about the similarities and the differences of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, now read about what iPhone 6 Plus has that the iPhone 6 lacks.
The landscape mode is that one thing that gives the iPhone 6 Plus a significant advantage over the iPhone 6. This is a software tweak that is exclusive to the 6 Plus and it gives the user the advantage of using and viewing apps as if they are using an iPad. This is indeed a great addition for the 6 Plus as it makes great use of the bigger phablet-sized screen.
With the landscape mode on the iPhone 6 Plus, it is possible to view the Home Screen in wider display and it can also let you use apps like Messages and Mails in landscape mode. The iPad-view gives you the chance to view your message list on the left side while you can see the contents on the right side of the screen.
Both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are becoming very popular these days because of the innovations and the additions that they have. Both iPhone models have the A8 processor and the iOS 8 OS and both have the sleek and comfortable body design. For people who have not been very comfortable with the industrial look and feel of the iPhone 5S, either of the two new iPhone models is surely going to be a great improvement.
The deciding factor on which iPhone is better for you would mainly be the size. The iPhone 6 Plus is significantly bigger and it has the phablet look. The iPhone 6 may be slightly bigger than the iPhone 5 S, but it can still prove comfort when held single-handedly. The size of your hands could be your basis on which iPhone to buy.
Another deciding factor could be your pant pockets. If you are in the habit of putting your mobile device on the front pocket of your pants, you may not be able to do that with the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 may have a better chance of fitting into your front pocket though.
The iPhone 6 Plus is said to be the best iPhone around when it comes to the features and its battery life capacity. It has the most advanced innovations from Apple and that makes it a coveted phone. The only problem with the iPhone 6 Plus that could be an advantage for the iPhone 6 is its size. If it is ok for you to carry around a phablet and to add about a hundred dollars, then the iPhone 6 Plus can indeed be the best choice. The camera performance alone should be worth the additional price and the bigger dimension.
But, if your pocket and your pocket cannot make room for the iPhone 6 Plus, choosing the iPhone 6 is not going to make you a loser. After all, it is still one of the newest devices from Apple. It also has some of the innovations incorporated with the 6 Plus and it can be the better option if your hands are not big enough to hold a phablet.
All in all, the iPhone 6 is that much anticipated phone after a lot of user have been amazed with the revolutionary design of the iPhone 4 and after some have been disappointed with the iPhone 5. The iPhone 6 is definitely the phone that can deliver the expectations.
But, if you want more than what to be expected, you are going to be in for a few extra surprises with the iPhone 6 Plus. As most people are saying now, it is the most serious Apple device in the market today. It may not be as feature-packed as the other smartphones, but Apple has definitely taken a big step forward with this phone. It is bigger and it has the best camera features and the battery life is something that just can be ignored.
